As a certified cannabis educator, I often browse conversations on Facebook groups dedicated to cannabis. Invariably, every few weeks, somebody asks a question along the lines of, "I am traveling by plane/going on a cruise/crossing the border, does anybody have any advice on how I can travel with my cannabis?" Also, invariably, these questions are met with the same "clever" responses, such as purchasing regular gummies and mixing the cannabis gummies in with them, emptying out a hair oil bottle and filling it with cannabis oil instead, putting joints in things like tampons that people are less likely to search, putting gel caps in supplement bottles, yada yada yada. These same posts are also filled with people saying they do it all the time and never get caught. Some are bold enough to come right out and advise to just openly smoke on the hotel or cruise balcony because unless someone reports it, which they usually don't, you won't get caught because they will never pinpoint the room the smell is coming from. My response...like many other undesirable outcomes to unsafe practices, "it only takes once". I am sure Brittney Griner, the American Olympian arrested in Russia, thought, "I won't get caught" too, but she did. And even though she was only carrying a vaporizer with less than half a gram of hash oil, she was detained for smuggling and possession and used to leverage the release of a notorious international arms dealer in exchange for her own release. Just two months ago, another "it won't happen to me" traveler was again arrested in Russia for being in possession of cannabis gummies. His fate is still unknown. Then there are the four Canadians executed this year for drug-related charges in China. Marijuana might seem benign, but as Canadians and Americans we have gotten used to a soft justice system. Other countries do not share our liberal views on crime, and many countries view breaking the law as breaking the law, whether you steal, murder, or carry illegal drugs. Is taking your cannabis with you on holidays worth the risk, especially given the state of unrest our world is in right now? Just because some keyboard cannabis crusaders have found ways of traveling with cannabis and have not yet been caught themselves, does not mean you won't be. In fact, as some countries are getting laxer with cannabis laws, other countries are stepping up their enforcement in response, including an increase in the use of drug sniffing dogs at airports and cruise terminals. Judicial systems in these countries often impose harsh sentences for drug possession, regardless of the amount.

As a best-case scenario, if caught, monkey see, monkey do, is liable to end up getting you kicked off a cruise ship or denied boarding a plane and banned for life from cruising or flying (about a year ago, Royal Caribbean kicked dozens of people off one of their cruises). Is it worth losing thousands of dollars, ruining your dream vacation, and facing bans? Or, at the other end of the spectrum, heavy fines, jail time, or even the death penalty as the worst case, depending on the country you get caught in as well as the quantity you are caught with and whether the country has any kind of an agenda with your home country that can use you for leverage or make an example out of you. Yes, you read that right, some countries still use the death penalty for drug-related crimes, and while most only impose the death penalty for offenses of trafficking, due to the unstable political climate of the world right now, it is easy to get swept up in the political stage.

Because of the world being so broad and many countries secretive, it's difficult to collect accurate data on just how many Canadians and Americans are arrested worldwide for marijuana possession while traveling, but just because we don't have numbers doesn't mean that it doesn't happen and all it takes is being that one person to have your entire life ruined.

For those who use it recreationally, being unable to travel with cannabis is merely an inconvenience (unless they have a substance dependency issue), but for many people, cannabis is medicine and they don't have any option when traveling other than to be in pain or sickness if they can't have their cannabis with them to control their symptoms. One obvious solution may be to just simply not travel if that's the case, because it's not worth the risk. There is, however, an alternative, and that is 420 friendly travel. There are places throughout the world that are becoming more and more friendly to cannabis users and while you may not be able to take the cannabis with you on the flight to get you to your destination, once you are at your destination you can safely purchase and consume cannabis as needed and enjoy your vacation symptom free.
